Eligibility & Prerequisites

Eligibility
To be eligible for entry into the Professional DPT program, applicants must have earned a baccalaureate degree, met the curriculum prerequisites, and demonstrate a commitment to a career in physical therapy. Individuals may apply before all requirements are met, providing they shall be completed prior to enrollment.

Prerequisite Course Work
  • 1 year (8 credits) chemistry sequence with labs
  • 1 year (8 credits) physics sequence with labs
  • 1 year of biology/zoology courses for science majors (content to include cell structure and function, function of macro- molecules, introduction to biochemistry, introduction to genetics)
  • Anatomy (human, vertebrate, comparative or anatomical kinesiology)
  • Physiology (human physiology preferred; a 2 course sequence of anatomy/physiology may meet the anatomy and physiology requirements)
  • Trigonometry (calculus is also acceptable)
  • Statistics
  • 1 year of English (to include either English composition or an upper-division writing course)
  • 1 year of psychology to include abnormal psychology (developmental psychology will not count for abnormal psychology)
  • At least 2 other courses in the humanities and social sciences (either political science, history, speech, literature, sociology, economics, psychology, philosophy or anthropology)
  • Completion of majority of courses prior to submitting application

Matriculation Requirements
  • All prerequisites completed and official grades submitted to Program
  • Completion of baccalaureate degree and submission of final transcript showing degree conferred
  • Existing, valid certification in first aid and infant/child/adult CPR (The student must assume responsibility for obtaining the certifications prior to entering the Program and to keep both certifications current while enrolled in the Program.)
  • Computer competence in use of the Internet (including knowledge of legal issues related to the use of the Internet), word processing, library database searching; experience with spreadsheet and statistics software is also desirable
  • Proficiency in medical terminology (taken as a course or completed through programmed text). All students are tested upon arrival to the Program. We recommend either a medical terminology course or successful completion of a programmed medical terminology text. A recommended text is Medical Terminology by Smith and Davis.
Undergraduate course work must provide applicants with a foundation in the liberal arts. Other courses that might benefit the student in completing the Program, but that are not required for application include neuroscience, microbiology, biochemistry, calculus, anthropology, developmental psychology, bio-psychology, physiological psychology and ethics.

A spectrum of non-academic activities is encouraged of all applicants and might consist of community service, social service organizations, peer tutoring or counseling, residence advising or athletics.

While volunteer or paid clinical experience is not a requirement, it is expected that applicants will have adequate exposure to physical therapy. This allows the applicant to demonstrate through the application process an understanding of the scope and breadth of physical therapy practice, as well as the willingness to work with a variety of patients in both outpatient and inpatient setting.
