Male and female athletes have similar movement-related risk factors for lower extremity sports injuries, including severe injuries such as ACL tears. Our clinic provides community-based instruction to youth and adult athletes and their sports teams on injury reduction strategies, particularly for the hips, knees and ankles. It is critical to understand what these risk factors are and how they can be addressed during warm-up, practices, and games. When implemented correctly, lower extremity injury prevention programs have consistently been shown to reduce injury risk as well as enhance athletic performance.
Elements of these programs include:
- Movement pattern training
- Core and leg strengthening
- Improving flexibility
- Plyometric training
- Balance training
