What We Treat

Have you or a loved one recently begun to have difficulties with written or verbal communication? Is it difficult to swallow safely? Are you noticing that your cognitive skills (memory, attention, problem solving, planning, etc.) are not working as well as they used to due to a neurological condition? At Washington University Physical Therapy at The Rehabilitation Institute of St. Louis, our Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) are trained at evaluating and treating all of these impairments and more. Our SLPs have multiple specialized trainings in different areas such as Certified Brain Injury Specialist, Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) for patients with Parkinson’s disease, Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallow (FEES) procedure for dysphagia assessment, Vital Stim Certification for dysphagia rehabilitation, and myofascial release for spasticity. We complete specialized evaluations for Augmentative & Alternative Communication devices and provide training and education for these specialized devices to allow for improved communication for acquired and progressive neurological disorders.

Our clinicians are trusted experts in the evaluation and treatment of a variety of disorders. We take an evidence-based approach to target your needs. Our goal is to help you improve your communication, cognition, language and/or swallowing to regain independence and return to your functional capabilities. Therapy begins with a comprehensive evaluation, and we empower you with education and will work with you to establish goals that are meaningful, functional, and attainable. Your one-on-one, evidence-based therapy sessions paired with a home exercise program will facilitate maximal progress.
