A stroke, or cerebrovascular accident (CVA), is caused by a blood clot or a bleed in the brain, which may result in cognitive impairments or physical dysfunction.

WashU Medicine Physical Therapy offers specialized rehabilitation for individuals following stroke focusing on enhancing mobility, function, and quality of life through personalized care.

Overview

Our interdisciplinary team of physical therapists (PTs), occupational therapists (OTs), and speech-language pathologists (SLPs) provide on-on-one care and work with you to create a unique treatment plan based on your needs.  Additionally, we have a full-time social worker available to assist with counseling and accessing various resources throughout the community.

Your Visit Includes:

  • Functional training: Individualized evidence-based exercise programs to manage symptoms such as mobility issues like transfers, muscle weakness, s, and pain.
  • Gait Training: Individualized gait training including high intensity gait training with vital sign monitoring, use of overhead track system or LiteGait, progression of assistive devices, recommendation on bracing.
  • Adaptive Equipment: Recommendations for appropriate adaptive equipment and assistive devices to enhance independence, prevent falls, and improve comfort. Collaboration with orthotists and assistive technology providers to identify the best bracing and wheelchair options.
  • Caregiver Training: Skilled training and recommendations for home accessibility to help you and your caregivers navigate changes in roles and routines.
  • Communication: Enhancing your communication abilities through training and assistive technologies.
  • Swallowing: Strategies to make swallowing safer and easier. Your speech therapist may recommend diet modifications to prevent choking and ensure proper nutrition.
  • Community Connection: Support in connecting with local and national organizations that provide additional supportive resources.
