Overview

Weightlifting is an excellent activity for people of all ages and experience levels. It builds strength, supports overall health, and fosters community—whether you lift in a gym, at home, or with a team. To lift effectively and safely, you need more than just strength: mobility, stability, and control are essential to maintain proper form across movements. Done well, weightlifting offers substantial physical and mental benefits. Done poorly, it can contribute to pain or injury over time.

Do you feel back pain during squats or deadlifts? Do your shoulders feel unstable when pressing overhead? Are your knees bothering you during heavy lifts? If so, we can help. At WashU Medicine Physical Therapy, our Weightlifting Clinic goes far beyond a simple form check. Whether you’re a recreational lifter or a seasoned competitor, your technique, mobility, and movement balance will determine your performance and longevity in the sport.

At WashU Medicine Physical Therapy, we don’t believe in “one-size-fits-all” lifting. Instead of surface-level corrections, we evaluate your unique biomechanics and movement patterns—the factors that truly drive strength, efficiency, and injury prevention. We tailor your setup, technique, and training strategies to your body, helping you lift pain-free and perform at your best.
You’ll work with licensed physical therapists who are also certified USAW Level 1 coaches. We understand how the body moves under load and have the expertise to fine-tune your mechanics, mobility, and programming so you can reach your goals. Whether your focus is Olympic lifting, powerlifting, or general strength training, we have the tools and knowledge to help you progress.
